A Little Love for the Long and Legless Celebrating World Snake Day with Rebecca & Macaroni (1)

At Home Run Pet Care, we celebrate all creatures, furry, feathery, and yes, even the scaly ones! Today, we’re shedding our usual dog and cat focus and giving a big shout out to the often misunderstood stars of World Snake Day.

We’re lucky to have a resident snake enthusiast on our team. Rebecca, one of our amazing pet care specialists, shares her home (and her heart) with a four foot long albino corn snake named Macaroni. He’s strikingly beautiful and an absolute sweetheart. “He never bites or causes harm,” Rebecca shared. “He loves to curl around our shoulders and even in my hair for warmth.” Like all pets, Macaroni has a favorite treat. Quail eggs! Fancy, right? What really melts our hearts is his silly side. He has a tiny turtle shell (way too small now) that he insists on squeezing into for naps. “Part of him sticks out because of it, and it makes him seem so silly,” Rebecca said with a laugh. “But he loves it. It’s still his favorite place to sleep.”

We asked Rebecca what she wishes more people knew about snakes, and her answer says it all: “People view snakes as aggressive more so than most creatures, but this is totally wrong. Snakes get scared as much as anyone and only try to defend themselves. Being gentle and kind, as with any pet, is key.” We couldn’t agree more!

If you’re considering adding a snake to your family be sure to do your research and connect with a reputable rescue or herpetological society. Like all pets, snakes need proper habitats, handling, and respect. And if you see a snake in your yard or on a hike, please remember these slinky reptiles play an important role in our ecosystems. Stay calm, take 3 steps back and just walk away. Snakes are not aggressive by nature. They will typically do everything they can to avoid us. When a snake does strike, it’s almost always out of fear or self-defense, not aggression. The more we understand them, the less we fear them. A little knowledge and compassion go a long way when it comes to peacefully coexisting.

Happy World Snake Day, Nashville!
